The New Jersey Board of Tree Experts

SITUATION

New Jersey requires that every tree maintenance operator or expert carries a valid licence to do business in New Jersey. The New Jersey Board of Tree Experts (NJBTE) manages the licenses for these tree care companies.
S&A Technologies developed the database and web application to store and update all license records.

CHALLENGES

S&A Technologies was confronted with a set of challenges:

• All management of licence and compliance records were kept in Excel and the NJBTE staff could not keep up with the maintenance work.
• The records of businesses, license holders and violations were not connected with each other which led ot incomplete data.
• Both design and development had to be financed through current fee and penalty payments.

ACTIONS

We started our project by getting an overview of the client's business model and finding out all business processes. From there, all tasks were divided into short, medium and long term categories:

• Short Term: Convert the existing Excel data into a robust database schema
• Medium Term: Give the administrators the functionality to manage businesses, licensees and penalties
• Long Term: Streamline all transactions and create a portal for inspectors and companies

REQUIREMENTS

S&A Technologies was asked to move all software components to a more robust and scalable platform, and support this platform for the foreseeable future.

RESULTS

The application is running to the fullest satisfaction of the administration. Expansions and new features have perfectly been implemented. The New Jersey Board of Tree Experts can stay focused on improving the safety of tree maintenance in New Jersey.
